Reading Rockets

Reading Rockets, one of the public outreach activities of the public TV station WETA the US Department of Education, has added a blog called “Sound it out”. Here’s a great part: Sound it out is written by my friend and former colleague, Joanne Meier. They’re just getting started, so you can follow along as the blog develops. 8 Wishes

Paul Sanchez, whom some readers might remember from an entry on LD Blog in November of 2005, is at it again. The earlier post refers to his solo bicycle trip around the US. This time he’s reporting on an activity he’s dubbed “8 Wishes,” which refers to actions he hopes to complete to promote awareness of Learning Disabilities. On 8 Wishes Paul has a report of his progress, including achieving the first wish: an interview with Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko’s.

Another misrepresentation

Writing in the San Luis Obispo (CA, US) Tribune, Mary Ross used Learning Disabilities to make a political point. She gave a definition of LD that was either her own or drawn from an uncited source, used it to make a veiled reference to US president, George W. Bush, and then expressed her hope that the then newly elected US Congress will take control of government. Regardless of whether one agrees with Ms. Ross’ ppolitical statement, if one’s concerned about Learning Disabilities, it’s important to examine her description of LD.

BDA woes

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) is in financial straights, according to a news story carried last month on the organization’s Web site and a press release from Craegmoor Healthcare. In the BDA’s news story (dated 11 December 2006), Richard Phillips, Chair of the Trustees, and Judi Stewart, Chief Executive of the organization, issued a statement that began this way:

The BDA has been through a serious financial cash flow crisis which has been caused by a number of issues. One of the main issues is a project funded by the European Social Fund involving two UK Government departments. Funds from this project have not been received due to a complex set of bureaucratic circumstances. The BDA was not able to resolve this issue in time to avoid the crisis. Despite considerable effort the issue remains unresolved at this time.
