That was step I thought would be a good thing to have going into med school. I'm always looking out for the next level of training I could get that's age-appropriate. I got CPR and first-aid certified when I was like, 12, he said. I want to continue to increase my skills as a future medical professional. Plus it's a real-world scenario: Is this something I really want to be doing for rest of my life?

Turns out, the answer is yes.

While working 20 hours a week in the afternoons toward his EMT certification, he also worked mornings at TripSavers Couriers as a rush driver for same-day orders.

That's a lot of driving.

I learned a lot about the roads of Colorado Springs, he laughed. And I was able to generate some cash flow while being deeply involved in something. And I like stress, things moving quickly.

The summer before, he had appealed to his outdoorsy side by working at the Colorado Tree Farm-watering trees and relocating plants in a large nursery.
